Located along the Potomac River, 14 miles upriver from Washington D.C., Great Falls Park is an 800-acre recreational area that is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The park straddles both the Maryland and Virginia sides of the falls. One highlight inside the park (on the Maryland side) is the Great Falls Tavern, a museum and headquarters for the National Park Service Rangers, who also maintain the C&O Canal. From April through October, park rangers allow visitors to take mule-drawn river barge rides down the historic canal.
Great Falls Park has numerous trails for bikers and hikers, as well as fishing spots and picnic areas that feature scenic views of the park. Areas for rock climbing and white-water kayaking are also available, making the park an urban-outdoorsman's paradise. In short, the park is known for two things, its scenic beauty at the head of Potomac River fall line and the historic Patowmack Canal.
