America's final arbiter of law, the Supreme Court is the guardian of our constitutional liberties, a place perhaps more celebrated in Hollywood films than in the patriotic hearts of Americans. Located across First Street from the U.S. Capitol building, the Supreme Court was in existence for 146 years before finding a permanent home in 1935, often relocating to various venues to perform duties. Indeed, the highest court in the land was not above operating in libraries and taverns during their homeless period.
The court's relatively recent new home, designed in classical Corinthian architecture, sits in perfect harmony with the nearby Congress buildings and across First Street from the Capitol building. Inscribed above the doors of the Supreme Court building: "equal justice under law." Court is in session from the first Monday in October until late June. October through April, oral arguments are presented to the court, open to the public. Visitors also can witness the judgments handed down in May and June. Court is in session Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. to noon, and again from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Public lectures are available in the court room every hour on the half hour from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., when court is not sitting, of course. Court Room seating is limited and available on a first-come first-serve basis.
