The Sackler Gallery joins the Freer Gallery to form the National Museum of Asian Art at the Smithsonian Institution. Both the Freer Gallery and Sackler Gallery are located along the National Mall. Though each collection is displayed separately within the two galleries, the two museums share a director, administrator, and staff. Both galleries house a renowned collection of art from China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, and the Near East, including artwork that dates back as far as the fifteenth century.
Dr. Arthur M. Sackler opened the Sackler Gallery in 1987 to house his collection of about 1,000 works of art. Highlights include early Chinese bronzes and jades, Chinese lacquerware, sculpture from South and Southeast Asia, and more. Since its opening, the galleries have expanded with the addition of the Vever Collection, a collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Japanese prints; Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean paintings; arts of village India; contemporary Chinese ceramics, and more. The Sackler Gallery also plays host to a wide array of acclaimed traveling exhibits.
