The National Museum of American History is a major reason why the Smithsonian has earned the nickname, "the nation's attic." Here visitors can catch a glimpse of countless American relics, artifacts, and mementos, ranging from the flag that inspired "The Star Spangled Banner" to Fonzie's leather jacket (Happy Days).
The museum is often the next stop after visiting the Washington Monument. With such a convenient location on the National Mall, the museum is a great place to start a tour of Washington's Museum Row. All ages will find something they can appreciate here. Exhibits include such items as Revolutionary war cannons, steam locomotives, Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves, race cars, and Archie Bunker's chair.
Kids will jump at the chance to participate in either of the children's activities programs. In the program, "Hands on History," kids aged five and up can partake in activities that include harnessing a mule or sorting mail as it was done on late nineteenth-century railroads. In the program, "Hands on Science," kids can conduct one of over twenty science experiments. Children's programs run Tuesday through Sunday from noon until 3:00 p.m.
The National Museum of American History was originally named the National Museum of History and Technology, so there is definitely an emphasis on the scientific developments that helped shape America. However, pure history enthusiasts will not be disappointed with the museum's more than three million objects and artifacts on display.
